Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition diagnosed when someone is suffering from back and associated leg pain. At Top Chiro we see great results with people with sciatica.
WHAT CAUSES SCIATICA?
Sciatica refers to the irritation of the sciatic nerve. Usually, sciatica is experienced as a result of an inflammatory condition derived from pressure being applied to the sciatic nerve itself. There are a number of reasons for this:
- A herniated disc
- Nerve impingement
- Overly tight muscles
- A misaligned vertebrae
- Rotated or misaligned pelvis
- Sacro-iliac joint dysfunction
The sciatic nerve branches out from the lower back all the way into the feet. It is both the thickest and longest nerve in the body. Whilst everyone prefers to pick out a single cause, there is usually a combination of some sort of structural misalignment in combination with other factors at play.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SCIATICA?
Sciatica often displays specific symptoms that aren’t usually found with other types of back pain or in other locations in the back, often because sciatic pain starts in the lumbar region (lower back). With this in mind, some of the common symptoms of sciatica that you should look out for are as follows:
- Back pain in the lumbar region that radiates down into the legs and/or feet
- Sharp or shooting pain that runs down into the buttocks or legs
- A burning or tingling sensation that runs down one or both legs
- Excessive stiffness in the lower back or legs that makes mobility difficult
- Muscle weakness that results in restricted movement
- Feeling numb or losing the sensation in your legs or lower back
- Constant pain that radiates down from the lumbar region into one side of the buttocks and/or down one leg
- Difficulty standing up as a result of shooting pains
- General pain that affects one or both hips
Typically, sciatica symptoms will only display themselves down one side of the body. Where it’s uncommon for such pain to be felt down both sides of the legs, but it can in certain cases
